Housing Program
The Elizabeth Fry Society of Northern Alberta offers several types of housing including Emergency Shelter Services, Short Term Transitional Housing, Supportive referrals for independent market housing and support and advocacy for those seeking assisted living arrangements.
Indigenous Housing Program
The Elizabeth Fry Society Indigenous housing program provides subsidized housing to Indigenous women, who are at risk of criminalization, or have been criminalized. With 47% of homeless individuals in Edmonton identifying as Indigenous, the program aims to break the vicious cycle from prison to homelessness. Less than 10% of women released from prisons in Canada have housing established for them.
Our four-month program includes a rental subsidy, welcome home grocery shop, furniture, and weekly in-home visits, with the goal of providing women with life skills, opportunity, and wraparound support. The program supports women in achieving personal successes, such as employment, family reunification, prosocial living, healthy lifestyles, and sobriety, ultimately working toward independent living and successful reintegration into their communities.
The goal of our Indigenous Housing Program is to reduce recidivism due to homelessness, offer supports and new opportunities to reintegrate back into community after incarceration and isolation.
"My favourite thing is the home visits! They make me accountable. The home visits really make me feel supported. I have the ability to air out my thoughts and make a concrete plan.”
