Housing Support Worker

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Northern Alberta (Efry) advances the dignity and worth of women, girls and gender-diverse people who are criminalized and those who are considered at risk. To address the rates of homelessness, and the deep concern over the criminalization of poverty, Efry is opening an Emergency Shelter for women. We are recruiting team members to help us end the cycle of poverty, prison, homelessness and despair for the people we serve.

Job Overview: As a Shelter Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in providing support and assistance to women experiencing homelessness in a compassionate and empowering environment. The primary responsibility is to ensure the safety, well-being, and dignity of residents while promoting a positive and supportive atmosphere within the shelter.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Resident Support:

    • Provide empathetic and non-judgmental support to women staying at the shelter.

    • Conduct intake assessments to understand the immediate needs and concerns of residents.

    • Develop and implement individualized service plans to address residents' goals and challenges.

  2. Safety and Security:

    • Maintain a secure and safe environment within the shelter.

    • Monitor access to the facility and enforce security protocols.

    • Collaborate with security personnel to address safety concerns.

  3. Crisis Intervention:

    • Respond to crisis situations with sensitivity and professionalism.

    • Utilize skills and knowledge of protocols for de-escalation and crisis management.

    • Liaise with appropriate partners, resources and emergency services as needed.

  4. Daily Operations:

    • Oversee daily operations, including meal distribution, chores, and other routine activities.

    • Coordinate and participate in daily resident meetings to address concerns and provide information.

    • Ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of common areas.

  5. Case Management:

    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of resident interactions and progress.

    • Collaborate with case management staff to address long-term goals and support residents in their journey toward stability.

  6. Community Resources:

    • Connect residents with available community resources, including healthcare, legal assistance, job training, and educational programs.

    • Build and maintain positive relationships with local service providers and agencies.

  7. Cultural Competence:

    • Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds and experiences of shelter residents.

    • Foster an inclusive and respectful environment for all residents.

  8. Communication:

    • Communicate effectively with residents, staff, and external partners.

    • Contribute to regular staff meetings and training sessions.

    • Provide clear and timely documentation of incidents, activities, and resident progress.

  9. Team Collaboration:

    • Collaborate with shelter team, Efry team, and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to resident care.

    • Participate in training and professional development opportunities.

    • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Values that align with the work of the Elizabeth Fry Society is a must.

  • Education in social work, psychology, or related field preferred.

  • Relevant experience in social services, counseling, or crisis intervention.

  • Knowledge of issues related to homelessness, trauma, and intersectionality.

  • Knowledge of and proven respect for Indigenous Social History.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.

  • Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach.
